Reasons why you should step out of your comfort zone

We all have fear or anxiety about different situations that life puts us in the way, for example, fear of not finding a person who would do my homework for me. To avoid going through these processes that cause us concern, we confine ourselves to a mental or behavioral state where it is possible to keep everything under control. This is known in psychology as a comfort zone.

Many times to get out of the comfort zone it is essential to face changes if we want to achieve certain objectives, and this will require motivation and courage on our part in order to take the first steps. We resist change and much more to situations that make us feel uncomfortable, however, once we become aware of it we feel more liberated.

A great example of this is those who decide to study abroad. Some know that they will take their subjects in a different language, others are clear that it will take time to return home and all assume that this adventure will mark a before and after in their life trajectory. But, without a doubt, the first step is to dare to face the changes.

Intuition or a conviction can be the springs that lead a student to make the determination to study in another country. While the hunch will guide the steps of those who let themselves be carried away by an emotion, the logic will structure the plan of the one who prefers to keep everything well tied.

Before leaving the comfort zone can be as different as each of the people who take the step of studying in another country at any given time. However, despite the differences, both may have something in common:

  • A plan:  their plan involves risking to win and, in that bet, they do not hesitate to think about how the change they are about to experience may affect their future.
  • One goal: your goal may be to learn languages ​​or improve your resume. What they are clear about is that they want to contribute more than the average, accumulate new achievements and test their limits.
  • A means:  sometimes good planning, hard work in the previous months, is enough to save extra money; and an even more intense effort that manages to raise the academic average a few points or tenths. Other times, the means that make it possible to get out of the comfort zone are scholarships to study abroad, which finance the student's tuition and/or accommodation and living expenses.

After leaving the comfort zone a new stage begins. Leaving behind land and all the people close to you and entering the unknown can be harder than it seemed during the first weeks.

Do not forget that this period will end, giving way to a succession of better moments where everything becomes easier and the new customs of the place begin to be better understood. Adapting to the rhythm of classes and study at the destination is easier and networks are being created, which connect with other students, other compatriots, teachers, and local companies.

Without realizing it, leaving your comfort zone will be considering going back. It seemed that that moment would never come, and when it does, it is almost as complicated a decision as studying abroad was once. After a year of living, studying, and working in another country, you have to re-analyze the situation, set new goals, and strive, once again, to achieve them successfully.

Some tips to start getting out of your comfort zone

The beginnings are hard, and more if you are going to leave the comfort zone in which you find yourself. Recognizing that it is an impediment to achieving your goals is the first step, and if you encounter difficulties or become discouraged, do not stop asking for help from trusted people or professionals.

These are some small gestures that you can do to make the process more bearable:

  • Set yourself small challenges that you can achieve in a day or in a short time, this will increase your motivation and make you feel better about yourself.
  • Do activities that you have never dared to do, such as learning a language, traveling alone, or signing up for a different sporting activity.
  • Talk to unfamiliar people. Many times leaving the comfort zone is related to the problems we have when it comes to socializing, and starting conversations with people we do not know will help us overcome it.
  • Do meditation to avoid "mental noise" or anxiety and stress that you may have throughout the process.
  • Anticipate the excuses you are going to make: automatically you will have ideas to justify not wanting to leave your comfort zone. Try to recognize and avoid them.
